Diaper rash on your baby can be so uncomfortable and irritating and make a mama want to cry for her little one. Clearing it up can be a pain in the butt… literally! As a pharmacist and mom to three littles, Magic Butt Cream is the best kept diaper rash secret you’ll wish you knew about sooner! For all of you new moms, soon-to-be moms, and even second or third time moms, keep reading to find out my easy, pharmacist recommended, go-to Magic Butt Cream recipe.
If you are struggling to clear up a diaper rash on your little one, your baby’s doctor may recommend applying a Magic Butt Cream to the rash. Your baby’s doctor can write a prescription for Magic Butt Cream, which can be compounded at your local pharmacy, but many times insurances won’t cover compounds like this. Lucky for you many Magic Butt Cream recipes have ingredients you can find over-the-counter to make your own Magic Butt Cream at home. All you need is 3 to 4 ingredients to make it!
Magic Butt Cream Recipe:
- 1 tube of zinc oxide 40% (Destin) – I always use the maximum strength concentration
- 1 tube of A&D Onitment
- approximately 1/4 cup of Mylanta
- 1 tube of clotrimazole 1% cream (Lotrimin) – optional
If you are wondering if it is okay to buy the store brand of one of these products, the answer is yes! I always buy whichever is cheaper (typically the store brand).
Directions:
- Using a container with a lid and something that you won’t mind throwing away after you’re done with the cream (I use a Rubbermaid container) combine zinc oxide, A&D ointment, and clotrimazole (if using). Mix until well blended.
- Slowly add Maalox in and mix until well blended. Sometimes I need less and sometimes a little more than 1/4 cup depending on the consistency of the cream.
- Apply liberally during each diaper change.
- The cream may separate out. Remix if this happens.
Tip: I stored mine in the fridge to thicken it up. It’s obviously cold when you apply it to your baby’s butt. My babies didn’t mind, but it was easier to apply in my opinion.
What does each ingredient do?
Zinc Oxide: Acts as a barrier for the skin.
A&D Ointment: Helps protect and heal the skin.
Mylanta: Dries the rash and reduces acidity to help decrease itching.
Clotrimazole: Yes, this is what you put on athlete’s foot or jock itch. It is an antifungal that helps treat yeast infections, which are often associated with diaper rash. I only add this to my Magic Butt Cream if babies diaper rash isn’t improving or babies doctor recommends this be added.
